How big do Akita dogs get?

Akita’s are a large breed of dog, whilst they aren’t the tallest they are a strong breed, quite chunky with a solid full-body build.

Their body is slightly elongated and their head is heavy, with small, triangular-shaped eyes.

Their ears aren’t very big in comparison with their heads, but they are very thick. Similar to their eyes, their ears have a triangular-shaped top.

They also have a very characteristic curvy fluffy tail. The curve has the shape of a ring, it’s sometimes curved like a spiral and touches the back of the dog.

How big an Akita will get depends on a couple of different factors, whilst the figures quoted here are averages, they should give a good general indication.

There’s not really an expected size of an Akita puppy, generally when monitoring the development of a puppy you would track the weight over time.

Male Akita puppies should weigh between;

  • 13-18 kg at 3 months
